Years 3 to 6

At Al-Hidayah Islamic School, we strongly encourage our students in Years 3 to 6 to build their independence and become more actively involved in the teaching and learning process. We aim to boost their engagement while still valuing the essential guidance, support, and instruction provided by their teachers.

An Inquiry-Based Approach

The Walker Learning approach in Years 3 to 6 has at its core the key principles of active, authentic and personalised engagement and learning.

The framework builds on the practices and principles of the Walker Learning approach being implemented in Kindergarten to Year 2 and provides developmentally appropriate practice for students in the middle and upper years of primary, which include:

  • Learning experiences that emphasise active engagement and provide children with opportunities to explore the processes involved in learning and skill acquisition, not just end products. These seek to encourage children to pursue some of their learning experiences as ongoing projects for either short or longer periods of time.
  • Skill instruction sessions and small and large group times which are still used within the classroom, including additional formal literacy and numeracy sessions each day.
  • Teachers who must still direct, scaffold, extend or intervene with children to ensure that children are actively engaged and learning.
  • A subject-based focus that applies for each term, linked to the Western Australian Curriculum.

The key elements of the Walker Learning approach in Years 3 to 6 are:

  • Tuning In / Reflection;
  • Focus Children;
  • Communication Board as the ‘hub’ for teaching and learning;
  • Formal explicit, differentiated teaching;
  • Clinic Groups;
  • Class meetings;
  • Education Research Projects (ERP) and Expos;
  • Teacher, self and peer assessment;
  • Mindful planning, documentation and reporting

The requirements of the Western Australian Curriculum are specifically taught in each learning area and broad learning intentions are used to support the Education Research Projects that are individually developed by the students and incorporate an element of student interest related to the learning intentions.

The Walker Learning approach in Years 3 to 6 aims to empower our students to take some responsibility for their learning, to identify some of their own learning needs, to practice being organised, and to build their communication skills with regards to their learning and interests.

Flexible Learning Environments

A core feature of the Walker Learning approach in Al-Hidayah Islamic School is the establishment of flexible learning environments in our Year 3 to 6 classrooms.

Our educators design flexible learning spaces that include adaptable seating areas and dynamic classroom setups designed to cater to the diverse learning styles and needs of each group of students. This approach fosters a more engaging and interactive educational experience, allowing students to choose seating arrangements that best support their focus and comfort.

Flexible learning environments encourage collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking by providing varied spaces for individual and group work. This adaptability is crucial for effective teaching and learning, as it helps create an inclusive atmosphere where every student can thrive and reach their full potential.
